Western Sydney’s river systems the Parramatta River, Hawkesbury–Nepean River and Georges River form more than 275km of waterways flowing through some of Australia’s fastest‑growing communities. These rivers hold extraordinary potential to reshape the region’s future: cooling our suburbs, strengthening biodiversity, activating recreation, driving tourism and reconnecting people with place.

In the past year, we have worked closely with government, local councils, cultural institutions, communities, universities and water experts to elevate rivers as a core part of Western Sydney’s urban future.

What We’ve Achieved Over the Past Year

✔ Release of the Western Sydney Rivers Report 2026

A landmark blueprint outlining new activation opportunities, global case studies, and policy recommendations to unlock the region’s waterways.

✔ “Our Active Rivers” Launch Event

An event showcasing evidence, data and design visions for what an activated river network could look like — including swimming sites, riverfront trails, jetty pools and blue‑green corridors.

✔ Media & Communications Campaign

News features, social campaigns, video storytelling and editorial content positioning rivers as essential infrastructure, not optional amenities.

✔ On‑the‑ground river tours

Guided site visits across the Parramatta, Georges and Nepean–Hawkesbury Rivers with members, council leaders and water authorities to understand opportunities first‑hand.

✔ Strengthened alliances with river advocates

Collaborations with the Parramatta River Catchment Group, Sydney Water, National Parks & Wildlife Service and local councils.

Why It Matters

Western Sydney is home to a population the size of Western Australia yet lacks the water‑based recreation, nature access and river city identity enjoyed in Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne.
Activating our rivers will:

  • cool the region
  • create new public spaces
  • boost health and wellbeing
  • increase tourism and local jobs
  • strengthen biodiversity and habitat
  • connect communities to nature
  • improve climate resilience

We have an opportunity and responsibility to transform these waterways for generations to come.

2026 Recommendations

1. Make Western Sydney’s rivers a priority for all levels of government

2. Establish an Urban Rivers Leadership Group

3. Introduce compulsory float and water‑safety lessons in NSW schools

4. Continue and expand the Urban Plunge & Places to Swim programs

5. Give Sydney Water greater responsibility for catchment management

6. Recognise ‘blue infrastructure’ in all State and Federal grants
