HOUSING NOW! ALLIANCE WELCOMES NSW GOVERNMENT'S EXPANSION OF TRANSPORT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT
MEDIA RELEASE 11 April 2024
The Housing Now! Alliance today expressed strong support for the NSW Government's latest announcement on the expansion of the Transport Oriented Development (TOD) planning reforms. This plan is set to deliver over 170,000 new, well-located, and well-designed homes across Sydney, the Illawarra, Hunter, and Central Coast regions.
The NSW Government unveiled the Transport Oriented Development State Environmental Planning Policy (TOD SEPP) last December, pinpointing 31 stations across 13 local government areas for new housing developments within a 400m radius. The TOD SEPP, with the agreement of local councils will now welcomes an additional six stations: Cardiff, Cockle Creek, Belmore, Lakemba, Punchbowl, and Woy Woy.
Comments attributable to Housing Now! Chair, David Borger:
“The Housing Now! Alliance applauds the collaborative approach taken by the NSW Government and the Department of Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure (DPHI), working together with 12 of the 13 local government areas. These partnerships are pivotal in crafting housing plans that not only meet but exceed the initial expectations set by the TOD SEPP.
"The expansion of the TOD SEPP represents a significant milestone in addressing the housing crisis in NSW. By fostering a synergy between housing development and public transport infrastructure, we are paving the way for sustainable community growth and ensuring that future generations have access to affordable, quality housing."
“As NSW faces an unprecedented housing crisis, the importance of initiatives like the TOD SEPP cannot be overstated. The alarming exodus of young people from Sydney underscores the urgency of implementing solutions that foster affordable living and vibrant, inclusive communities.
“The Housing Now! Alliance stands ready to support the NSW Government, local councils, and communities in bringing these transformative developments to fruition. Together, we can ensure a brighter, more sustainable future for all residents of NSW.”
